What happened
On February 19, 2022, flight ENT4598, operating a Boeing 737-800 with registration SP-ESI, departed from Heshim (HESH) bound for Warsaw Chopin Airport (EPWA). While the aircraft was cruising in the Cyprus FIR (LCCC) airspace, the First Officer experienced a sudden medical emergency and lost consciousness.
Upon realizing the medical situation, the crew initiated emergency procedures, providing first aid to the unconscious pilot. To ensure the safety of the flight and the incapacitated crew member, the crew performed a descent and diverted the aircraft to Larnaca International Airport (LCLK), where they landed safely.
The investigation
The PKBWL conducted an investigation into the incident following the submission of the final report and documentation by the operator. The investigation focused on the medical circumstances surrounding the First Officer's loss of consciousness and the subsequent emergency response by the crew.
Findings
The investigation established that the primary cause of the incident was a sudden medical indisposition affecting the First Officer.
Safety action
Following the event, the operator conducted a formal internal investigation. The affected pilot was referred for a medical re-examination to ensure fitness for duty and to obtain a Class 1 medical certificate. Additionally, the pilot underwent a proficiency check on a flight simulator, which they successfully completed.
