What happened
On 20 July 2022, a Wizz Air flight operating from Bari to Krakow was interrupted by a bomb threat received during the flight. The crew diverted the Airbus A321 NEO, registration HA-LGA, to Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport. The aircraft landed safely at 12:38 UTC and came to a stop at the B5 holding bay.
Following the landing, the crew initiated an emergency evacuation procedure, which involved the deployment of all eight emergency slides. During the process of exiting the aircraft, one passenger sustained a broken ankle.
The investigation
The Transportation Safety Bureau of Hungary (TSB) conducted an investigation into the incident. The scope of the inquiry included on-site inspections, witness interviews, and the collection of relevant reports from involved organizations. The TSB also reviewed the emergency procedures utilized by the operator during the event.
Findings
The investigation established that the primary reason for the diversion and subsequent evacuation was the receipt of a bomb threat. While the evacuation resulted in one injury, the investigation concluded that no flight safety-related learnings were identified from the incident. The TSB determined that the event did not necessitate further investigation or regulatory action.
