What happened
On 16 February 2024, a Tecnam P92 Echo Super, registration SP-SKNN, was performing a test flight following engine replacement and scheduled maintenance. The flight originated from Zator aerodrome (EPZT) with the intention of landing at Milewo aerodrome (EPMX). The crew consisted of the pilot and one passenger.
Prior to arrival, the pilot had been informed via telephone that a 200-meter section at the beginning of runway 18 was wet and unsuitable for touchdown. While the pilot initially planned an approach to runway 36, the presence of another aircraft in the vicinity prompted a decision to land on runway 18 instead.
During the final approach, the aircraft maintained a constant angle; however, the use of landing flaps without corresponding throttle adjustments led to a progressive decrease in airspeed. At an altitude of approximately 2 meters above ground level, the aircraft entered a deep stall. The pilot failed to maintain lateral balance, causing the aircraft to tilt left and lose directional control. The subsequent hard touchdown and propeller strike on the grass runway resulted in a ground loop and the aircraft overturning. There was no fire following the impact.
The investigation
The PKBWL investigation utilized recordings from the Milewo aerodrome monitoring system, witness statements, and interviews with the participants. The investigation focused on the flight parameters during the approach, the pilot's response to the configuration changes, and the runway conditions.
Findings
- The primary cause of the accident was the lack of speed control during the landing approach.
- The pilot's limited general flying experience and lack of experience on this specific aircraft type contributed to the loss of control.
- The decision to change the landing direction to runway 18, which contained an unsuitable wet section, was a contributing factor.
- The pilot had experienced significant breaks in flight activity (at least 90 days) and had not performed adequate preparation for flying this new aircraft type.
- The aircraft was airworthy and properly maintained.
- The accident resulted in substantial damage to the aircraft, while the passenger sustained minor injuries.
