What happened
On May 29, 2024, at approximately 10:21 EDT, an Airbus Industries A319-132, operating as American Airlines flight 2134 (N812AW), and a Hawker Beechcraft Corporation B300C, operating as N250AA, were involved in a runway incursion at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) in Arlington, Virginia. There were no injuries reported on either aircraft.
At the time of the event, the weather was VFR with a 360-degree wind at 8 knots and 10 miles of visibility. The American Airlines flight was a scheduled passenger service from DCA to Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), while the Beechcraft was a general aviation flight arriving from Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport (PHF).
According to air traffic control recordings, the crew of N250AA was established on a 6-mile final for runway 33 and was cleared to land after being advised of an aircraft in a line-up and wait position. Shortly after, the controller instructed the crew of N812AW to proceed ahead of an uninvolved aircraft and hold short of runway 1.
As N250AA approached 0.9 miles from runway 33, the American Airlines aircraft was cleared for takeoff. At 14:21:09 EDT, the Airport Surface Detection Equipment – Model X (ASDE-X) triggered an alarm, alerting tower personnel to a conflict. The local controller immediately cancelled the takeoff clearance for N812AW and instructed the crew of N250AA to perform a go-around. The crew of N812AW reported rejecting the takeoff, while the crew of N250AA reported they were unable to go around because they had already landed. Both aircraft subsequently exited their respective runways without further incident.
