A JetBlue Airways Airbus A320 experienced an engine seizure and uncommanded yaw shortly after departing Lynden Pindling International Airport.

What happened

On July 13, 2025, at approximately 10:28 am local time, a JetBlue Airways flight departing from Lynden Pindling International Airport (MYNN) in Nassau, Bahamas, experienced a significant mechanical issue. The aircraft, an Airbus A320-232 registered as N793JB, was performing an initial climb toward New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport when the flight crew reported hearing a loud bang. This was immediately followed by an uncommanded yaw of the aircraft. The crew subsequently identified that the No. 2 engine had seized.

Following the engine failure, the crew declared an emergency and transitioned to a return flight to Nassau. Air traffic control provided priority handling for the aircraft. The flight, which was carrying 157 passengers and six crew members, landed safely at MYNN at approximately 10:41 am local time. There were no injuries reported among the passengers or crew.

The investigation

The preliminary investigation focused on the circumstances surrounding the engine failure and the aircraft's behavior during the climb. Investigators examined the aircraft's flight path and the sequence of events leading to the emergency declaration. Initial inspections of the aircraft's No. 2 engine fan blades revealed no external signs of damage.

Probable cause

The cause of the engine seizure is currently under investigation, though the event was characterized by a loud bang and subsequent uncommanded yaw.
