Night training flight crash in Pernek

4 fatalities • Malacky-Kuchyňa AFB, Slovakia • Landing (descent or approach)

A military training aircraft crashed into wooded terrain near an airfield during a night approach, resulting in the deaths of all four crew members.

What happened

During a local training mission involving aerial bombing exercises, a flight crew was returning to their home base. As the aircraft approached the airfield under nighttime conditions, the crew encountered significantly reduced visibility. While maneuvering through hilly and heavily wooded terrain located approximately 4 km southeast of the airbase in Pernek, the aircraft descended to an insufficient altitude. The plane struck trees, which triggered a post-crash fire that completely destroyed the wreckage.

All four members of the crew perished in the accident. There were no survivors from the impact.

Findings

Investigations into the crash determined that the pilot maintained an approach at an unsafe altitude during the night descent. This low altitude, combined with the presence of trees and limited visibility, led to the fatal collision.

Probable cause

The pilot continued the approach at an unsafe altitude during nighttime operations.
