What happened
On October 23, 2022, an Airbus 330-322, registration HL7525, was completing a flight from Incheon International Airport to Mactan-Cebu International Airport in the Philippines. During the arrival process, the flight crew managed multiple approach attempts due to deteriorating weather and technical complications. The initial approach was aborted after heavy rain reduced visibility below minima, leading to a go-around.
A second go-around was initiated following a sink rate warning, during which the landing gear made contact with the ground. This event triggered ECAM messages regarding faults in the landing gear control interface units. During subsequent attempts to resolve these issues, the crew also noted an anti-skid brake fault and a hydraulic reservoir low level message. After a third approach was aborted due to a failure of the right main landing gear down-lock indicator, the crew attempted a fourth landing.
During this final approach, the aircraft failed to decelerate sufficiently on the runway, resulting in a runway overrun. The aircraft exited the paved surface, striking the localizer antenna and the approach lighting system before coming to rest in a grassy area approximately 235 meters past the end of Runway 22. While there was no fire, the aircraft was destroyed. The incident resulted in 20 total persons (one crew member, four cabin crew, and fifteen passengers) sustaining minor injuries.
Findings
- The aircraft experienced a sequence of multiple go-arounds driven by heavy rain and shifting wind conditions.
- Technical malfunctions involving the landing gear control interface units and hydraulic systems complicated the landing sequence.
- The aircraft overran the runway during the fourth landing attempt, leading to significant structural damage.
