What happened
During the final approach phase to Bagram Airfield, a four-engine airplane was targeted by ground fire. The projectiles specifically impacted the nose landing gear and other parts of the aircraft. Following the impact, the aircraft landed on the runway but became impossible to control. The plane veered off the active runway surface, where it subsequently collided with two Mil Mi-6 helicopters that were parked in the area.
Despite the severity of the collision and the damage sustained by the airframe, all five crew members on board managed to evacuate the aircraft without sustaining any injuries. The impact and subsequent ground fire resulted in the aircraft being declared a total loss, as it was damaged beyond repair.
Findings
Investigations into the incident determined that the primary factor leading to the loss of control and the subsequent runway excursion was the impact from ground fire during the approach to the airfield.
