Runway excursion involving military cargo aircraft at Tyumen Airport

No fatalities • Tyumen, Russia • Takeoff (climb)

A military transport flight carrying construction materials overran the runway during takeoff, resulting in minor injuries to the crew and heavy damage to the aircraft.

What happened

During a military logistics mission, an aircraft transporting metallic pipes for pipeline development experienced a runway excursion at Tyumen Airport. While performing the takeoff roll, the pilot-in-command initiated an aborted takeoff following an unexpected occurrence. The aircraft failed to stop within the available runway length, eventually exiting the paved surface and coming to a halt in a ditch approximately 50 meters beyond the end of the runway.

As a result of the incident, all six crew members sustained slight injuries. The aircraft itself suffered damage that was classified as beyond repair.

Findings

Investigations revealed that the flight crew had been instructed to wait on the taxiway for several minutes to allow an Antonov AN-2 to complete its landing. During this holding period, the crew engaged the parking brake. However, the pilot failed to disengage the parking brake after receiving clearance for takeoff. This oversight prevented the aircraft from reaching rotation speed and caused it to struggle during the takeoff roll, leading to the eventual overrun.

Probable cause

The accident was caused by the failure of the crew to release the parking brake after a period of holding on the runway.
