Aircraft crash near Kirensk Airport resulting in six fatalities

6 fatalities • Kirensk, Russia • Takeoff (climb)

A cargo flight returning to Irkutsk crashed shortly after takeoff from Kirensk, leading to the deaths of all onboard crew members.

What happened

On a scheduled cargo mission traveling from Mirnyy back to Irkutsk, an aircraft departed from Kirensk Airport. During the initial climb phase, once the plane had reached an altitude of approximately 500 meters, it experienced a sudden left bank and descended rapidly into the terrain. The impact occurred at a wooden structure situated roughly 750 meters south of the runway.

The accident resulted in the total destruction of the aircraft. There were six fatalities among the crew members on board.

Findings

Investigation into the crash revealed that both engines on the left side of the aircraft suffered a loss of power during the climb following takeoff. Although the crew attempted to feather the propeller to manage the failure, the maneuver was unsuccessful. This loss of thrust caused the plane to bank at a 70-degree angle before hitting the ground.

While investigators could not pinpoint the specific trigger for the engine malfunction, they considered several possibilities, including an electrical short-circuit or the buildup of ice within the fuel filter.

Probable cause

The simultaneous loss of power in both left engines during the climb phase led to an uncontrollable descent and subsequent impact.
