Cargo aircraft accident at Botyobiya Airport

1 fatality • Botyobiya, Russia • Landing (descent or approach)

A cargo flight operating for a geophysical mission crashed during its approach to Botyobiya, resulting in one fatality and two serious injuries.

What happened

On the scheduled cargo flight from Nyurba Airport to Novosibirsk, an aircraft carrying 900 kilograms of various goods was performing a multi-stop route that included stops at Botyobiya, Muhtuya, Vitim, Kirensk, and Krasnoyarsk. The mission was being conducted on behalf of the 'Amakinskoy' geophysical mission.

Approximately eighty minutes after departing Nyurba, the aircraft reached Botyobiya. During the approach to the runway, the captain initiated a steep descent at a rate of approximately 5 to 7 meters per second and reduced engine power. During this maneuver, the aircraft made contact with the ground a short distance before the runway threshold. The impact caused the plane to bounce and subsequently crash 84 meters further along, where a post-crash fire erupted.

The accident resulted in one fatality involving the flight mechanic, while both pilots sustained serious injuries due to burns. The aircraft was completely destroyed by the force of the impact and the resulting flames.

Findings

Investigations into the accident identified that the primary factor was improper piloting techniques employed by the pilot-in-command during the descent. Additionally, a lack of oversight from local authorities was noted as a contributing element to the event.

Probable cause

The crash was caused by the pilot-in-command utilizing improper flying techniques during the approach.
