What happened
A single-engine aircraft departed from Yerevan-Erebuni Airport at 10:47 local time, performing a cargo mission to Kamo. The flight was transporting 140 kilograms of mail and various goods with two pilots on board. Shortly after takeoff, under favorable weather conditions, the crew reported their position to air traffic control while cruising at an altitude of 1,800 meters and received clearance to climb to 2,400 meters.
During the flight, the aircraft initiated a right turn and subsequently collided with the southern slope of Mt Gantusar, which has an elevation of 2,299 meters. The impact occurred approximately two kilometers northeast of Jraber. The wreckage was located at an altitude of 1,915 meters. The accident resulted in two fatalities, as both pilots were killed in the crash. Although conditions were initially good, visibility at the site of the wreckage was reported to be only about 60 meters due to heavy fog.
Findings
Investigations into the accident concluded that weather conditions worsened during the flight, leading to extremely limited visibility caused by thick fog. The primary factor in the accident was the decision by the crew to proceed with the flight despite visibility dropping below established minimums rather than returning to the departure airport in Yerevan.
