What happened
A flight operating between Ust-Khayryuzovo and Palana, which included scheduled stops at Tiguil and Voyampolka, was transporting two crew members, three passengers, and a cargo of 954 kilograms of deer meat. During the leg departing from Voyampolka, the flight crew realized that a package had been left behind and intended to return to the airfield to deliver it.
The pilot initiated a low-altitude pass at approximately 50 meters above the ground. While attempting to jettison the package by opening the cockpit window, the aircraft entered a left bank and lost altitude. This maneuver caused the left wing to make contact with the surface. The impact sent the aircraft type into an uncontrolled cartwheel, eventually landing upside down on icy terrain. The crash resulted in the destruction of the plane and five injuries, including one fatality that occurred several hours after the accident.
Findings
The investigation concluded that the accident was driven by the pilot's decision to attempt a mid-air cargo drop rather than performing a standard landing. The crew failed to maintain proper monitoring of the aircraft's attitude and flight path during the hazardous maneuver.
