What happened
During a flight originating from Hargeisa, the crew initiated their descent toward runway 05L at Galkayo-Abdullahi Yusuf Airport. The approach proceeded without incident until the aircraft reached the short final stage of the landing sequence. At an altitude of approximately 5 to 7 feet above the ground, the captain observed an animal moving across the runway from the left side to the right.
In an effort to prevent a collision with the animal, the pilot attempted to extend the flare. This maneuver resulted in a hard touchdown followed by several bounces on the runway surface. Following these impacts, the aircraft became uncontrollable and drifted off the runway. The sequence of events concluded with the aircraft coming to a stop with both wings partially separated from the fuselage. There were no fatalities among the 36 occupants, all of whom evacuated the aircraft safely, though the aircraft sustained damage that rendered it a total loss.
Findings
- An animal entered the runway path during the final moments of the landing approach.
- An evasive maneuver intended to avoid the animal caused an unstable touchdown and subsequent bouncing.
