A hijacked Antonov AN-2 was shot down over the Black Sea by a Soviet military fighter after an unauthorized flight attempt toward Turkey.

What happened

An incident occurred at Tuapse Airport in the Krasnodar region involving the unauthorized departure of an AN-2 aircraft. A former pilot, previously experienced with both Aeroflot and the Soviet Air Force, took control of the plane with the intention of flying to Turkey.

During the flight, the aircraft was intercepted by a Yak-28P belonging to the 171 iap PVO unit. Following this interception, a MiG-17 from the same regiment, operated by a Lieutenant-Colonel, engaged the aircraft. The AN-2 was subsequently shot down over the Black Sea. The impact with the water resulted in the death of one fatality (the pilot). Minimal wreckage was recovered from the sea following the crash.

Investigations into the event determined that the primary reason for the destruction of the aircraft was its interception and engagement by a Soviet Air Force fighter jet during an unauthorized border crossing attempt.
