Aircraft ground excursion and fire during landing

No fatalities • Chandigarh, India • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft experienced instability during its landing roll, resulting in a wing separation and subsequent overturned position and fire.

What happened

During the landing phase of the flight, the aircraft experienced significant instability as it approached the runway. Upon making contact with the surface, the right wing struck the ground with enough force to be completely severed from the airframe. Following this structural failure, the aircraft lost directional control and veered away from the runway centerline.

The aircraft proceeded through a grassy area adjacent to the runway before eventually coming to a halt in an overturned position. The impact and subsequent movement caused the aircraft to catch fire. Despite the intensity of the flames, all nine occupants were able to evacuate the wreckage. All individuals involved sustained only minor injuries, though the aircraft was destroyed during the accident.

Findings

  • The aircraft exhibited instability during the landing sequence.
  • The primary sequence of events was initiated by the right wing striking the ground upon touchdown.

Probable cause

The aircraft became unstable during landing, leading to a wing strike and subsequent loss of control.
