What happened
The incident occurred while the aircraft was operating on a striking force mission. During this operation, the plane experienced an engine failure that necessitated an immediate return to base. The pilot initiated a diversion toward RAF Thorney Island but was unable to regain control or altitude sufficient for a safe landing. Consequently, the aircraft crashed into the sea in the waters off Hayling Island.
Emergency response teams recovered all four members of the crew from the water. While most escaped without serious harm, one individual sustained injuries during the accident and subsequent rescue operations. The surviving personnel included the pilot, co-pilot, and two aircrew members who were extracted from the wreckage.
