What happened
The incident occurred during a night training exercise that departed from RAF Bishops Court. While operating over the northern region of Wales under marginal weather conditions, the aircraft collided with the eastern slope of Mt Mynydd Perfedd. The impact resulted in the total destruction of the airframe.
All four individuals on board were killed in the accident. The crew consisted of a pilot, a wireless operator and air gunner, and two navigators serving with the 7th AOS unit.
Findings
Official investigations determined that the crash was primarily due to a significant deviation from the intended flight path. At the time of the impact, the aircraft was located more than 30 km away from its initial planned track.
