What happened
The incident involved a twin engine aircraft operating out of RAF Honington. The flight was a routine training mission carrying one instructor and three student pilots. While executing the final approach to land at RAF Waddington, the aircraft lost control. It subsequently crashed into a field located short of the runway threshold.
All four individuals on board sustained injuries in the impact. The airframe suffered extensive damage, rendering it beyond repair. The crew was associated with the 311th Squadron.
Findings
Investigations determined that the loss of control during the final approach phase was directly attributed to a mechanical failure. Specifically, the loss of the starboard aileron caused the aircraft to become uncontrollable, leading to the crash.
