What happened
The incident occurred while the crew was conducting a training flight departing from RAF Abbotsinch. During the operation, the twin-engine aircraft was flying at a low altitude within thick cloud cover. The plane struck a hill situated at Whittlemoor Dam, close to Howwood. Upon impact, the airframe disintegrated completely. Both individuals on board, who were serving with the 269th Squadron, lost their lives in the accident.
Witnesses reported that visibility conditions were poor at the time of the crash. It is believed the crew was attempting to identify an airfield for a landing when the collision took place.
