What happened
During the final approach phase to RAF Silloth, the aircraft experienced a stall at an altitude of less than 10 feet above the ground. As a direct result of this aerodynamic event, the airplane impacted the runway surface. The collision caused structural damage that rendered the airframe damaged beyond repair. Despite the severity of the impact and the destruction of the aircraft, both members of the flight crew managed to escape the wreckage unhurt.
Findings
The official investigation concluded that the incident was triggered by insufficient approach speed during the final segment of the flight. This lack of adequate airspeed led directly to the stall condition immediately prior to ground contact.
