What happened
The incident involved a military aircraft that had departed from Millom in southwest Cumbria. The flight was part of a scheduled navigation and bombing exercise. While proceeding southward over the mountainous terrain of southern Scotland, the aircraft collided with the northern slope of Craigronald. The impact occurred on a snow-covered section of the mountain.
Emergency services responded promptly to the reported crash site. A Mountain Rescue Team dispatched from Wigtown reached the location and discovered one crew member still alive. However, this individual succumbed to their injuries before medical transport could be completed. All four personnel aboard the aircraft perished in the accident.
The crew consisted of a pilot, a navigator, a bomb aimer, and a wireless operator, all serving with the 2nd Airfield Unit (AFU).
