What happened
On the morning of the accident, a twin-engine Avro Anson departed from Tuxtla Gutierrez Airport at 09:15 local time, intended for a short flight to Yajalón. During the approach phase into Yajalón Airport, this aircraft entered into a mid-air collision with another Avro Anson, registered XB-YUZ. The second aircraft had been traveling from San Cristóbal de Las Casas and was carrying a total of six people, consisting of two crew members and four passengers.
Following the impact between the two planes, both aircraft lost altitude rapidly and descended into a nearby prairie. The crash resulted in 17 fatalities, accounting for every person on board both aircraft.
