Aircraft overrun and building collision at Palacios Airport

No fatalities • Palacios, Honduras • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft operating out of La Ceiba overran the runway at Palacios Airport and struck a building, resulting in minor injuries to all occupants.

What happened

During a flight originating from La Ceiba, the aircraft was performing its approach to Palacios Airport. While on final approach, the aircraft maintained an excessive altitude and a high rate of descent. As a result of these flight parameters, the aircraft touched down approximately two-thirds of the way down the grass runway.

Due to the late touchdown point, the pilot was unable to decelerate the aircraft sufficiently before the end of the runway. The aircraft continued past the runway threshold and traveled an additional 65 metres before colliding with a nearby structure.

Findings

  • The aircraft was too high and descending too fast during the final approach phase.
  • All five people on board survived the impact, sustaining only minor injuries.
  • The aircraft sustained damage that rendered it a total loss.

Probable cause

The aircraft's high approach speed and altitude led to a late touchdown on the grass runway, preventing a safe stop before the runway end.
