Aircraft impact during go-around maneuver

No fatalities • Marble Canyon, United States of America • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft crashed into the ground while performing a steep turn during a go-around maneuver at an airport.

What happened

During an approach to runway 03, an aircraft was performing a straight-in landing attempt. Witnesses positioned at the departure end of the runway observed the aircraft approaching the runway, noting that the approach appeared stable. However, due to a topographical rise in the runway surface, the observers temporarily lost visual contact with the aircraft just prior to its intended touchdown.

Upon regaining sight of the aircraft, the witnesses observed it performing a go-around. As the aircraft passed abeam the observers' position, it entered a significant left-hand bank, with the angle estimated to be between 60 and 80 degrees. At an altitude of approximately 200 feet, the landing gear remained in the extended position. During this maneuver, the nose of the aircraft abruptly dropped, leading to a rapid descent and subsequent impact with the ground.

Findings

An inspection of the engines and airframe systems following the accident revealed no evidence of mechanical failure or malfunction prior to the impact. The investigation focused on the flight path and the steeply banked turn executed during the go-around phase.

Probable cause

The aircraft entered an extreme bank angle during a go-around maneuver, resulting in a loss of altitude and subsequent ground impact.
