An aircraft crashed in a jungle area east of Kindu Airport following an onboard explosion shortly after takeoff, resulting in no survivors.

What happened

Shortly after departing from Kindu Airport, the aircraft began its climb. Approximately three minutes into the flight, the captain notified Air Traffic Control of an explosion occurring in the rear section of the plane. Following this report, the crew maintained communication with controllers for several minutes.

Ultimately, the aircraft went down in a forested region located roughly 39 km east of the airport. The impact occurred 11 minutes after the initial takeoff. The wreckage was completely destroyed upon hitting the ground.

Findings

There were 41 fatalities in the accident, which included 20 women and children. The primary factor leading to the crash was an explosion in the rear of the aircraft during the climb phase.
