What happened
At 17:18 local time, the crew began their takeoff roll on Runway 07 at Puerto Carrements-Germán Olano Airport. During the departure sequence, the aircraft failed to lift off within the 1,800-meter runway limits. The pilot-in-command attempted rotation after an extended ground roll, resulting in the aircraft overrunning the end of the runway and traveling approximately 95 meters beyond the pavement. During this excursion, the aircraft struck two perimeter fences and crossed a roadway before finally achieving lift-off.
As the aircraft entered its initial climb, it struck a tree, which caused the separation of the right main landing gear and triggered a failure of the number three engine. The aircraft reached an altitude of 790 feet before entering a right-hand turn and descending into an open field roughly 7.5 km from the airport. The impact resulted in a post-crash fire. Among the occupants, there were five fatalities and one flight engineer who sustained serious injuries.
Findings
- The aircraft overran the runway during the takeoff phase.
- Impact with vegetation caused the loss of the right main gear and engine failure.
