What happened
During a scheduled flight from Lima to Iquitos, the aircraft was performing a scheduled stop at Pucallpa-Capitán David Abensur Rengifo Airport. While the initial portion of the flight proceeded without incident, the flight crew encountered worsening meteorological conditions while preparing to land on runway 02. The area was experiencing significant turbulence, heavy rainfall, and the presence of cumulonimbus clouds.
As the aircraft transitioned into the final approach phase, the flight became unstable. The plane descended below the established glide path and struck a wooded, swampy region situated approximately 3.5 km from the runway threshold. The impact and subsequent fire resulted in the total destruction of the aircraft. The accident resulted in 40 fatalities, including five crew members, and 58 injuries, several of which were classified as serious.
Findings
Investigations into the accident indicate that deteriorating weather conditions, characterized by heavy rain and convective activity, contributed to the loss of flight stability during the approach to the destination.
