Runway excursion involving Air Sénégal aircraft at Dakar-Blaise Diagne Airport

No fatalities • Dakar-Blaise Diagne, Senegal • Takeoff (climb)

An Air Sénégal flight experienced a hydraulic failure during takeoff from Dakar, resulting in a runway overrun and minor injuries to several passengers.

What happened

During a nighttime departure from runway 01 at Dakar-Blaise Diagne Airport, the crew of an Air Sénégal flight experienced technical difficulties involving the aircraft's hydraulic systems. In response to these issues, the flight crew initiated a rejected takeoff procedure. However, the aircraft was unable to decelerate sufficiently to remain within the runway boundaries. As a result, the aircraft type overran the runway and moved into soft terrain, where it eventually came to a stop.

Following the excursion, a fire ignited on the right side of the fuselage. Emergency responders were able to suppress the flames quickly. All 85 occupants on board were successfully evacuated from the plane. While there were no fatalities, the incident resulted in 10 injuries among the passengers and crew.

Findings

  • The primary factor leading to the excursion was the encounter with hydraulic problems during the takeoff roll.
  • The inability to stop the aircraft within the available runway distance contributed to the overrun into the soft ground.

Probable cause

A hydraulic system malfunction during the takeoff roll necessitated an aborted takeoff that could not be completed within the remaining runway length.
