What happened
During an approach to Zhanjiang Airport, the aircraft encountered severe weather characterized by heavy rainfall, strong winds, and thunderstorm activity. Due to an incorrect approach configuration, the aircraft crossed the runway threshold at an altitude of approximately 400 metres.
Upon attempting to land, the pilot-in-command increased the descent rate, resulting in a hard impact and a subsequent bounce. The aircraft floated for roughly 330 metres before coming to rest 15 metres to the right of the runway centerline. During the excursion, the aircraft lost its undercarriage and traveled several dozen metres further before stopping.
All 90 occupants were successfully rescued from the scene, though the incident resulted in six injuries among the passengers.
Findings
- The approach was conducted under adverse meteorological conditions involving thunderstorms and heavy rain.
- An incorrect approach configuration contributed to the aircraft passing the threshold at an excessive altitude.
