Aircraft overrun at Bergamo-Orio al Serio Airport

No fatalities • Bergamo-Orio al Serio, Italy • Landing (descent or approach)

A DHL Airways cargo flight overran the runway at Bergamo-Orio al Serio Airport during heavy thunderstorms, resulting in the destruction of the aircraft.

What happened

On a scheduled cargo flight operating as service QY7332, an aircraft departed from Paris-Roissy-Charles de Gaulle Airport bound for Bergamo. During the approach to Bergamo-Orio al Serio Airport, the flight crew encountered severe weather, characterized by heavy rainfall, strong winds, and thunderstorm activity.

The aircraft crossed the runway threshold at a speed of 156 knots. Approximately 18 seconds after crossing the threshold, the plane reached a point 2,000 metres down the runway. Due to the inability to decelerate within the remaining length of runway 28, which measures 2,807 metres, the aircraft exited the paved surface. The aircraft proceeded through the perimeter fencing, causing the loss of both engines and the undercarriage. The sequence ended when the aircraft came to a halt on a nearby motorway, roughly 520 metres beyond the runway extremity. There were no fatalities among the two crew members, who evacuated the aircraft safely, though the aircraft was destroyed.

Findings

  • The aircraft encountered adverse weather conditions including thunderstorms and heavy rain during the landing phase.

Probable cause
