What happened
On the night of the accident, an unscheduled cargo flight was performing a transport mission from Nabire to Bilogai, carrying a payload consisting of cement, palm oil, and food supplies. The flight crew, consisting of two pilots, departed Nabire at 2355 UTC. Shortly before the scheduled arrival time of 0045 UTC, the aircraft was tracked at an altitude of 6,960 feet, traveling at 94 knots on a heading of 277 degrees.
As the aircraft approached the touchdown zone of runway 27, a go-around procedure was initiated because an unauthorized individual had entered the runway shoulder. During this climb, the aircraft's nose pitched up significantly. This maneuver caused the aircraft to lose altitude and enter a state of aerodynamic instability. The aircraft subsequently banked to the right and impacted a corn farm at coordinates S 03 44.58 E 137 0.96, at an altitude of approximately 6,550 feet, while heading 260 degrees. The impact resulted in the total destruction of the aircraft.
Regarding the crew, the second in command sustained fatal injuries and was found outside the wreckage. The captain suffered serious injuries but remained secured in the pilot seat by the shoulder harness.
Findings
Investigation into the flight path indicates that the aircraft entered a stall during the go-around maneuver. This occurred because the high nose-up attitude reached an angle of attack that exceeded the aircraft's stall margins.
