What happened
Shortly after departing from Edmonton Airport, the pilot of the aircraft reported an engine failure to air traffic control. Despite this mechanical issue occurring approximately six minutes into the flight, the decision was made to proceed with the mission rather than initiating a return to the departure airfield.
As the flight progressed, the aircraft struggled to reach and sustain its assigned altitude. Due to these performance limitations, the pilot opted to divert the flight to Calgary Airport to perform a landing. During the final approach phase, the aircraft lost sufficient airspeed, resulting in an aerodynamic stall. The plane subsequently impacted a field.
Findings
- The accident resulted in two fatalities.
- The primary contributing factor was the engine failure that occurred early in the flight sequence.
- The loss of control during the approach was caused by the pilot's inability to maintain the necessary flying speed.
