What happened
On July 28, 2017, a Cessna 152, registration HK2703, was conducting a solo flight training session at the Flaminio Suarez Camacho Aerodrome (SKGY) in Guaymaral, Colombia. The student pilot had completed four touch-and-go maneuvers on runway 11 and subsequently requested a full landing. Air Traffic Control authorized the landing, noting a headwind of 7 to 9 knots.
As the aircraft approached the runway, the pilot performed an improper flare maneuver. This resulted in an abnormal contact with the runway, causing the aircraft to bounce twice. During the subsequent loss of control, the aircraft veered off the left side of the runway and underwent a longitudinal roll, eventually coming to rest in an inverted position between taxiways C and D. The student pilot sustained minor injuries, and while the aircraft suffered substantial structural damage, there was no fire.
The investigation
The GRIAA investigation examined the flight history, maintenance records, and the training environment of the flight school. The investigation confirmed that the aircraft was airworthy and had complied with all required maintenance programs. The student pilot was found to be technically and physically fit for flight, with a valid medical certificate.
Investigators also reviewed the training progress of the student, noting that while the pilot had significant experience at the Girardot aerodrome, this was only the third time performing runway work at Guaymaral. The investigation also looked into the flight school's oversight of instructor observations and risk management protocols regarding student maneuvers.
