A floatplane struck a mountain slope on the north side of the Isle of Jura while flying in clouds, resulting in seven fatalities and one survivor.

What happened

The aircraft was returning to Oban after completing an overhaul at Helensburgh. As it approached its destination, the crew faced marginal weather conditions. To avoid landing in poor visibility, they elected to delay the approach and complete a circuit south of the airport. While cruising within clouds, the airplane impacted the slope of Mt Cruach na Seilcheig on the north side of the Isle of Jura.

The wreckage was located the following day. One crew member was found alive, while seven other occupants were killed. The incident occurred during the approach phase when the aircraft deviated from its intended landing path due to weather-related delays.

Findings

Investigations concluded that the accident resulted from a controlled flight into terrain. The decision to extend the circuit in marginal conditions led to the aircraft entering cloud cover, where it subsequently collided with the mountain slope.

Probable cause

Controlled flight into terrain
