What happened
The incident occurred during a nighttime operation where the aircraft was conducting an instrument approach. Due to the darkness, no flare path had been established or requested, and landing lights were not illuminated to assist with the final phase of flight. The seaplane impacted the water surface, which triggered a water loop. Following this aerodynamic event, the aircraft came to rest in approximately eight feet of water.
All eight members of the crew were successfully rescued from the wreckage. The aircraft sustained damage that rendered it beyond repair. The crew complement consisted of the pilot and seven other service members, including officers and enlisted personnel from various ratings such as ensigns, naval aviation mechanics, and seaman second classes.
