What happened
During a routine maritime patrol, a military seaplane operated by the Royal Norwegian Navy disappeared over the Atlantic Ocean. The aircraft impacted the water surface and was subsequently lost without leaving any immediate trace of its position or condition. All nine members of the crew were on board at the time of the accident, resulting in a total of nine fatalities. No survivors were reported from this incident.
The search for the missing aircraft did not yield immediate results. It was not until 1983 that the wreckage was finally located. The debris field was found at coordinates 64° 47' N and 26° 19' W, situated approximately 220 kilometers to the west-northwest of Reykjavik, Iceland.
The crew consisted entirely of personnel from the Royal Norwegian Navy's aviation branch (Marinens flygevåpen). The team included a pilot and eight other specialists, including navigators and aircrew members. Due to the remote location and the nature of the crash into the ocean, the specific mechanical or environmental triggers for the initial loss remained unclear in the immediate aftermath.
