A seaplane carrying six people was shot down by German forces after fuel exhaustion forced a landing near the French coast, resulting in three fatalities.

What happened

The aircraft departed Hamilton, Bermuda, on a long-range transatlantic mission to Largs, Scotland. The flight carried two passengers and four crew members. During this phase, the seaplane was targeted by German anti-aircraft fire and fighter aircraft. The combined attack resulted in the destruction of the airplane and its crash into the sea.

Findings

The official investigation concluded that the loss of the aircraft was caused by being shot down by a combination of German Flak and fighter attacks. Three crew members were killed in the incident, while three others survived to become prisoners of war.

Probable cause
