What happened
During the landing phase at Palma Sur Airport, an incident occurred involving a Piper aircraft, registration TI-281. As the crew completed their touchdown on the runway, they observed a separate private aircraft performing a turn onto the active runway directly in their path.
In an effort to prevent a mid-air or ground collision with the encroaching plane, the flight crew executed an emergency maneuver by steering the aircraft to the right of the runway surface. During this avoidance maneuver, the aircraft exited the paved area and struck several trees before coming to a complete stop. The impact resulted in the aircraft being damaged beyond repair.
Findings
- The primary factor leading to the excursion was the presence of another aircraft on the runway during the landing roll.
- The maneuver intended to avoid a collision caused the aircraft to leave the prepared surface and encounter obstacles.
