Landing gear collapse during arrival at Governor’s Harbour

No fatalities • Governor's Harbour, Eleuthera Island, Bahamas • Landing (descent or approach)

A landing gear failure caused an aircraft to veer off the runway during its arrival at Governor’s Harbour, resulting in minor injuries.

What happened

During flight UP353, which originated from Nassau, the flight crew initiated a descent toward Governor’s Harbour. Upon touchdown on runway 15, the left main landing gear experienced a structural failure and collapsed. This caused the aircraft type to slide for several dozen meters along the runway surface before the path of the vehicle drifted slightly to the left. The movement ceased once the aircraft came to a complete stop on the main runway.

All 51 occupants were able to exit the aircraft without being trapped. While the evacuation was successful, a small number of passengers sustained minor injuries during the incident. The aircraft sustained damage that rendered it a total loss.

Findings

  • The primary factor in the excursion was the collapse of the left main landing gear immediately following landing.

Probable cause

The collapse of the left main landing gear upon touchdown caused the aircraft to slide and veer on the runway.
