Incident Overview
A pilot departed Nassau for a local test flight. While cruising at an altitude of 5,000 feet, he simulated the failure of both engines with the fuel boost on. The aircraft descended to 2,500 feet, and when the pilot was unable to restart both engines, he decided to ditch the aircraft into the sea. The pilot was rescued, but the aircraft sank and was lost.
Investigation Findings
The official investigation identified the probable cause as a forced landing off airport on water following a complete failure of both engines. Several contributing factors were noted: the pilot exercised poor judgment, failed to follow approved procedures, failed to use miscellaneous equipment, and the engines loaded up.
