What happened
A scheduled domestic flight traveling from Copenhagen Airport (EKCH) to Aalborg Airport (EKYT) encountered technical difficulties during its approach to runway 26R. While the crew was extending the landing gear, the nose gear and the left main landing gear successfully locked into position, but the right main landing gear displayed an "in transit" status. After notifying Aalborg Tower of the discrepancy, the crew executed a go-around at 1,100 feet MSL.
Following the go-around, the crew consulted the Quick Reference Handbook and attempted various procedures to secure the gear. Despite resetting the alternate gear extension system and attempting a manual gear selection, the right main landing gear failed to show a down and locked indication. The crew declared a mayday and entered a holding pattern to manage fuel levels and prepare the cabin for an emergency landing. As a precaution, passengers in specific seats near the right propeller area were relocated.
During the final approach, the aircraft's flaps were set to 10°, at which point the landing gear warning horn activated and remained audible for the duration of the flight. Upon touchdown, the left main landing gear made contact with the runway first, followed by the right gear. Shortly after the right main landing gear touched the surface, the right main landing gear collapsed. This caused the aircraft to veer off the runway to the right, eventually coming to a stop at a heading of 340°.
Findings
- The right main landing gear failed to reach the down and locked position despite multiple attempts using both normal and alternate extension procedures.
- The collapse of the right main landing gear during the landing roll caused the aircraft to depart the runway.
