A cargo flight operating between Lae and Wabag crashed in a wooded area near Katanka, resulting in one fatality.

What happened

During a scheduled cargo operation from Lae to Wabag, a twin engine aircraft encountered heavy smoke haze that significantly degraded visibility. While navigating through these difficult atmospheric conditions, the aircraft struck obstacles and crashed into a forested region situated approximately 5 km from the Katanka Airstrip.

The impact resulted in the total destruction of the airframe. The pilot, who was the only person on board at the time of the accident, sustained fatal injuries during the crash.

Findings

Official investigations concluded that the primary factor in the accident was the decision to proceed with the flight despite the presence of severe smoke haze. This reduced visibility forced the aircraft to maintain a dangerously low altitude to remain in visual contact with the ground, which ultimately led to the collision with terrain obstacles.

Probable cause

The pilot continued flight operations through heavy smoke haze, necessitating an unsafe altitude to maintain visual ground reference.
