What happened
During an instrument flight rules (IFR) charter operation from Resolute Bay to Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, a Dornier 228-201 operated by Summit Air Charters experienced a ground impact. The incident occurred at 01:43 mountain standard time while the aircraft was executing its final approach to Runway 31 True. The aircraft struck the terrain roughly 1.5 nautical miles before reaching the runway threshold.
Onboard the flight were two pilots and 12 passengers. Following the impact, 2 persons sustained serious injuries. The aircraft itself suffered substantial damage during the collision. Following the event, the onboard emergency locator transmitter was triggered, and the crew successfully used the aircraft's radio to alert the Cambridge Bay Airport radio operator of the situation.
Search and rescue operations were initiated immediately. Ground teams located the wreckage within 30 minutes of the alert, and all 14 occupants were successfully evacuated from the crash site within two hours of the accident.
