What happened
During an active flight, the flight crew received reports indicating that meteorological conditions at their intended destination were worsening. In response to this deterioration, the decision was made to alter the flight path and divert the aircraft toward Ponta Grossa.
As the aircraft was performing a descent into the area under unfavorable weather, it collided with a mountain located a short distance from the Ponta Grossa airfield. The impact resulted in three fatalities, involving all members of the crew on board.
Findings
Investigations into the accident highlighted significant issues regarding flight preparation and decision-making by the crew. It was determined that the crew failed to adequately prepare for the changing environment, specifically choosing to proceed toward Ponta Grossa despite the presence of much more favorable visual flight rules (VFR) conditions available at alternative airports, such as São Paulo or Florianópolis.
