While the aircraft was cruising over the El Cocuy National Park, it encountered difficult atmospheric conditions. The aircraft lost altitude and subsequently crashed in a remote, mountainous area situated roughly 45 km west of Tame.

Search efforts led to the discovery of the wreckage on 12 April 1999. The impact resulted in eight fatalities, with no survivors reported among the crew or passengers.
