What happened
A four-engine aircraft departed from Quito Airport at 15:48 local time, en route to Lima, Peru. During the flight, the crew provided a position report at 18:45 local time, estimating an arrival at Lima Airport by 20:11 local time.
While maintaining a cruising altitude of 9,200 feet, the aircraft type impacted the terrain at the slope of Cerro Baco. The crash site was situated approximately 12 km northwest of Huaricanga. Search efforts located the wreckage several hours after the impact. There were 14 fatalities among the occupants, with no survivors reported.
Findings
Investigations into the accident suggest that the aircraft was not adhering to its designated flight path at the moment of impact. This deviation from the assigned route may have been the result of a navigation error or a failure involving one or more onboard instruments.
