Right main gear collapse during landing at Miami International Airport

No fatalities • Miami-Intl, United States of America • Landing (descent or approach)

A cargo aircraft experienced a landing gear failure on runway 09R at Miami International Airport, resulting in a runway excursion and significant airframe damage.

What happened

A cargo flight arriving from Medellín-José María Córdova Airport (Rionegro) was performing its landing sequence on runway 09R at Miami International Airport. The arrival proceeded without incident until the aircraft reached the runway surface. After traveling approximately 100 to 120 meters following touchdown, the flight crew engaged the thrust reverser systems. At this moment, the right main landing gear suffered a collapse.

This mechanical failure caused the aircraft to veer toward the right side of the runway. The movement continued until the plane came to a stop in the vicinity of taxiway U. Although the aircraft sustained damage that rendered it a total loss, all three crew members were able to evacuate the wreckage without injury.

Findings

The incident was triggered by the collapse of the right main gear immediately following the activation of thrust reversers.

Probable cause

The collapse of the right main landing gear during the deployment of thrust reversers caused the aircraft to veer off the runway.
