What happened
During a flight originating from Florencia, the crew received clearance to begin their descent toward Neiva-Benito Salas Airport. While performing the approach, the aircraft entered an unstable state. Following a GPWS warning, the captain applied additional power, which caused the plane to climb above the established glide path. Despite this deviation, the approach was maintained, and the aircraft crossed the runway threshold at an altitude of 140 feet.
The aircraft eventually made contact with the runway 1,700 feet beyond the threshold, near intersection Bravo. Although the crew initiated braking maneuvers immediately upon touchdown, the failure of two tires prevented the aircraft from stopping within the 5,249-foot runway length. The aircraft subsequently overran the paved surface and came to a stop in a nearby grassy area. There were no fatalities among the 71 occupants, all of whom evacuated the aircraft without injury. The aircraft sustained damage that rendered it a total loss.
Findings
- The approach was characterized by an unstable flight profile.
- The aircraft climbed above the glide path following a GPWS alert and subsequent power increase.
- The loss of braking effectiveness was caused by the bursting of two tires during the landing roll.
