Accident Details
On 16 November 2023 at 07:08 UTC, a Cessna 172 aircraft registered as N92MM experienced a loss of engine power while flying at an altitude of 4,500 feet. The flight had departed Aswan Airport at 04:00 local time, destined for El Gouna Airport, where the aircraft was scheduled to participate in an aircraft race. Two passengers were on board for a sightseeing trip. Approximately two hours after takeoff, the engine lost power. The captain applied necessary procedures, but the engine did not respond. Consequently, the captain decided to perform an emergency landing and successfully touched down in a sandy area near the Safaga/Qena road. The landing was reported as safe, with no injuries to any occupants. However, the aircraft sustained major damage as a result of the landing.
Investigation Status
An investigation was initiated by the Egyptian Aircraft Accident Investigation Directorate under case number EGAI2023-0007. Investigators created a photographic record of the accident site and aircraft. Interviews were conducted with the captain to gather information about the flight and the events leading to the loss of engine power. No safety recommendations have been issued at this stage. The investigation is pending the completion of an engine shop visit report, which is expected to provide further insight into the cause of the power loss.
